Honda VTEC Spaceframe Mini

Well, since the last update lots have been hapening.  The engine is back in, some fuel lines have been fitted, the fuel pump etc is in, the exhaust is fitted back down the centre of the car, the pedals are in, the rear arches have been fitted and also very nearly the boot lid and the doors.  See for yourself in the pics below.

Well time stands still for no man, or car lol.  since the last update there has been loads happening with the build.  To name but a few jobs here is what we managed to achieve.

1) Cam belt has been changed and new rocker cover fitted

2) Exhaust tunnel has been fitted

3) Gear linkage has been made

4) Front suspension has been re-designed

5) Front bulkhead has been started and the electrics are starting to go in.

As per usual there has been hickups along the way.  The main one has been with the gear linkage, we started off trying to use 3/8 socket UJ joints.  These proved to be usless as they had far too much slogger, maybe we should have bought snap-on lol.  In the end i had to bite the bullet and bought a gear linkage UJ from demon tweeks.  This was fitted on the gearbox end of the linkage whilst the other end of the linkage uses a modified UJ from an MGF steering column.

The re-designed front suspension utilises some proper coil-overs, they may be second hand but have recently been re-furbished so should be just upto the job.  The mounting brackets have had to be altered which makes the original turrets a bit redundent but the new brackets have the advantage of being adjustable for height without altering corner weights.

Well today was a good day, the engine fired up, it actually runs.  Over the last 3 days a friend of mine has been wiring up the DTA ECU for me whilst i've been working on the fuel lines.  It must have been a good job he did because it did not even hesitate, first turn primed the fuel and the second turn saw it fire and run.

The clutch has also been piped in along with the brakes, however the .625 master cylinder has proved to be too small so i'm going with a bigger one, that is planned to be fitted tomorrow.

The body is going away for painting tomorrow so hopefully will be back next week.  I'm not sure if thats enough time but even if it's only got the primer on i'll be happy.

What else has been happening since the last update.  Well the electrics are done, door latches fitted (temporary ones anyway), Battery fitted and cables fixed into place.  Radiator fitted, all engine ancilleries fitted, so as you can see it's been a busy time

Things are happening so fast at the moment it is difficult to get the work done and to keep the site upto date.  The good news is that the frame is now nearly complete.  A lot of the silly smaller jobs have been done such as making suspension spacers, steering lock stops, seats, harnesses etc and the big jobs have also been fully sorted such as clutch, gear linkage and brakes.

The body has been away for painting and the 2 lads from the 16v sprint championship that have been doing it for me have done a cracking job.  the plan is now to go and collect it tomorrow and get it fitted onto the frame for the last time.

Our first race is on the 12th June and now instead of us having an uphill struggle it looks like we have a downhill bikeride.  This is the shell as it was today, just needs to dry a little longer before we move it.
